Buying an engagement ring can feel like it should be simple. And then you start looking, and suddenly there are four Cs, two diamond origins, a dozen setting styles, and a sizing problem to solve in secret. Here's how we'd walk you through it, the way we do with clients who come to us for a bespoke piece.

Start with the stone: lab-grown or natural

This is usually the first fork in the road, and it comes down to priorities rather than "better or worse." Lab-grown and natural diamonds are chemically identical, graded on the same scale, with the main differences being origin, price, and the story you want to tell. Many clients choose lab-grown specifically because it allows for a larger, more striking stone within the same budget.

Think about how she'll actually wear it

An engagement ring gets worn every single day, through cooking, typing, exercise, and sleep, far more than any other piece of jewellery. Low-set, bezel, and button-back settings, like the one on The Darling Ring, tend to suit an active lifestyle better than tall prong settings that catch on fabric. Getting the size right, secretly

This is the part that trips most people up. The easiest, least suspicious method is borrowing an existing ring she wears on her ring finger (even briefly) to trace or measure. If you can't get an accurate size before proposing, don't let it stop you: most of our rings can be resized afterwards, so an educated guess is rarely a real risk.
