Getting your ring size right matters more with fine jewellery than almost anywhere else. A ring that's slightly off won't sit the way it's designed to. The good news: you don't need to visit a jeweller to get a reliable measurement. Here are three ways to do it at home.

Method 1: The string or paper strip method

Wrap a thin strip of paper or a piece of non-stretchy string snugly around the base of your finger: not too tight, not loose enough to slide over your knuckle. Mark where the ends meet, then measure that length against a ruler in millimetres. That measurement is your finger's circumference, which you can cross-reference against a standard ring size chart.

Method 2: Measure a ring you already own

If you have a ring that already fits the intended finger well, this is the most reliable option. Lay it flat and measure the internal diameter in millimetres, from one inner edge straight across to the other. Even a rough estimate from an existing ring tends to be more accurate than a paper strip, since it accounts for knuckle size implicitly.

Method 3: Print a ring sizer

Several printable ring-sizing guides are available online. The key is to print at 100% scale (most browsers default to "fit to page," which will throw off the measurement, so double-check this setting before printing). Cut out the sizer, wrap it around the finger, and read the size where it meets the marked line.

Tips for a more accurate result

• Measure at the end of the day. Fingers are typically slightly larger in the evening and in warm weather, smaller in the morning and in the cold.
• Measure two or three times and take the most consistent result rather than a single reading.
• Consider the width of the band. Wider bands (like The Everyday Diamond Eternity Band) tend to fit more snugly than thin bands at the same nominal size, so many people size up half a size for a wider style.
• Know your dominant hand. Most people's dominant hand runs slightly larger, so measure the specific finger the ring is intended for.

Sizing secretly for a surprise proposal

If you're measuring someone else's finger without them realising, borrowing an existing ring they already wear on the correct finger (even briefly, to trace or measure) is usually the easiest and least suspicious option.
