Almost every piece in the Sunday Finest collection comes with a choice: lab-grown or natural diamond. It's not a small decision, so it's worth understanding what you're actually choosing between, because the honest answer is: less than you might think, and more than you might expect.
They're the same stone, made differently
A lab-grown diamond is not a simulant, and it isn't the same thing as cubic zirconia or moissanite. It's chemically, physically, and optically identical to a natural diamond: pure crystallised carbon, graded on the same 4Cs (cut, colour, clarity, carat) by the same gemological labs. The only difference is origin. A natural diamond formed over one to three billion years under immense heat and pressure deep in the earth, while a lab-grown diamond is grown in a matter of weeks using technology that recreates those same conditions.
Put a natural and a lab-grown diamond of the same cut and clarity side by side, and even a trained jeweller needs specialised equipment to tell them apart.
Why the price is so different
This is usually the first question, and the honest answer is simple: natural diamonds are rare and finite; lab-grown diamonds are not. That scarcity is priced in. A lab-grown diamond typically costs 60–85% less than a natural stone of equivalent size and quality, which is why so many of our pieces, from The Everyday Tennis Necklace to The Everyday Diamond Studs, offer both, at a total carat weight that suits your budget rather than the other way around.
What doesn't change
Durability, sparkle, and how the stone wears over decades are identical. Diamonds are diamonds, regardless of where they were formed. Both are graded, both are certified, and both are, quite literally, forever in the way that matters: nothing about a lab-grown diamond fades, clouds, or loses brilliance over time.
So which should you choose?
There's no wrong answer. Some people are drawn to the geological story of a natural stone: something that's been forming since before recorded history. Others prefer the transparency and value of a lab-grown diamond, or the lighter environmental footprint of a stone that didn't require mining. Many of our clients simply let carat weight decide. A lab-grown diamond lets you wear significantly more stone for the same investment.
Whichever you choose, every Sunday Finest piece is made to be worn every day, not saved for occasions. If you're weighing this decision for an engagement ring or a bespoke piece, our Bespoke & Engagement team is happy to talk it through with you.
